Tristan is the hero of the medieval romance of Tristan and Iseult, a Celtic name probably from the Pictish Drustan, of uncertain meaning; it has long been associated with the French triste, "sad", because of the lovers' tragic fate. Wagner's opera and the film Legends of the Fall kept the name in the public ear. Tristan ranked 105th in 2000, peaked at number 80 in 2009 and has fallen since to 309th place in 2025.
