Terra is the Latin word for "earth" and the name of the Roman earth goddess Terra Mater, the counterpart of the Greek Gaia. In American use it also serves as a spelling of Tara, which is why it was most common in the 1970s and 1980s. Terra entered this century at number 1230 in 2000, has slipped slowly since then and ranks number 2434 in 2025 with 74 girls.
