Marianne is a French compound of Marie and Anne, so it joins Mary, a name of uncertain meaning usually read as "beloved" or "sea of bitterness", to Anne, "grace". Since the Revolution Marianne has been the personification of the French Republic, and American readers know it from Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility and from singer Marianne Faithfull. Marianne ranked number 1376 in 2000, has moved between number 1850 and number 2600 since 2015 and ranks 1828 in 2025.
