Lavinia is a Latin name of uncertain meaning, borne in Roman legend by the wife of Aeneas and tied to the ancient city of Lavinium; popular readings such as "purity" or "woman of Rome" are later guesses. Shakespeare used it in Titus Andronicus, and it was a favorite of 19th-century novelists. In the United States Lavinia is rare but slowly rising: it peaked at number 2147 in 2024 and ranks number 2290 in 2025.
