Laurie is a pet form of Laura and Lauren, which go back to the Latin laurus and mean "laurel", the leaf that crowned victors in ancient Rome. It was a staple of mid-century America, worn by actress Laurie Metcalf and the heroine of the musical Oklahoma!. In the United States Laurie has long since faded from the top 1000; it ranked number 1770 in 2000 and number 2842 in 2025.
