Katarina is the Slavic, Scandinavian and German form of Katherine, from the Greek Aikaterine, a name of uncertain origin that has long been linked to katharos, "pure". Figure skater Katarina Witt, two-time Olympic champion, made the spelling familiar to Americans in the 1980s. Katarina ranked number 646 in 2000, its best year in the data, has slipped out of the top 1000 since, stood at number 1359 in 2015 and ranks 1788 in 2025.
