Jakai is a modern American coinage that joins the popular Ja- prefix, as in Jamari and Jaylen, to Kai, a name often explained from the Hawaiian word for "sea". It has no traditional meaning of its own and belongs to the recent wave of names ending in the bright -kai sound. In the United States Jakai rose from number 3466 in 2000 into the top 1000 in 2021 and reaches number 569 among boys' names in 2025, its best rank yet.
