Italy is a place name adopted as a girl's name, from the Latin Italia; the origin of the country's name is debated, and one old explanation links it to a word for "land of calves" or young cattle. It follows the American fashion for country and city names such as Paris, London and Ireland. Italy climbed from number 4333 in 2000 to its best rank of number 1592 in 2021 and stands at number 1936 in 2025.
