Gryffin is a variant of Griffin, which comes from the Welsh name Gruffudd, of uncertain meaning but often explained as "strong lord", and also recalls the griffin, the legendary creature that is half eagle and half lion. The y spelling echoes Gryffindor, the Hogwarts house in the Harry Potter books, which appeared just as the spelling began to catch on. Gryffin ranked number 9514 in 2000, reached number 1665 in 2019 and stood at number 2239 among US boys in 2025.
