Evangelina is the Spanish and Italian form of Evangeline and comes from the Greek euangelion, so it means "good news" or "bearer of good news", the same word that gives us gospel. Longfellow's 1847 poem Evangeline made the shorter form famous in America, and the longer Latin form has a romantic, old-world sound. Evangelina has moved from number 1991 in 2000 to number 1187 in 2025, close to its peak of 1127 in 2012.
