Ester is the Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Scandinavian spelling of Esther, the biblical queen who saved the Jews of Persia; the name is usually explained from the Persian word for "star" or linked to the goddess Ishtar. It is the form found in most Spanish Bibles, which is why it is used in Hispanic families across the US. Ester has stayed between numbers 1400 and 1900 for the past 25 years and ranks number 1574 in 2025.
