Emmet is an English surname that grew out of a medieval pet form of Emma, so it carries the Germanic meaning "whole" or "universal". In Ireland it honors the patriot Robert Emmet, executed in 1803, and the single-t spelling is the one used in his name. Emmet entered the US top 1000 in 2014, peaked at number 860 in 2015 and has since slipped to number 1555 in 2025, while Emmett with two t's remains far more common.
