Emmanuel comes from the Hebrew Immanuel and means "God is with us", the name the prophet Isaiah gives to the promised child and which the Gospel of Matthew applies to Jesus. It is widely used in French-, Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking families as well as in Africa. Emmanuel ranked 196th in the United States in 2000, peaked at number 144 in 2009 and has stayed in the 150s to 190s since, ranking 179th in 2025.
