Elaia is a Basque name meaning "swallow", the migrating bird that announces spring, and it is also the ancient Greek word for the "olive tree", which makes it a quiet cousin of Olivia. It has been a popular choice in the Basque Country in recent years and is just starting to appear in the United States. Elaia had fewer than five births in 2000, rose from number 12159 in 2015 to number 2700 in 2024 and stands at number 2910 in 2025 with 58 births.
