Brooklyn is the New York City borough, named after the Dutch town of Breukelen, which is usually explained as "marshland" or "broken land"; as a girls' name it is also heard as a blend of Brook and Lynn. It became a first name in the 1990s and was boosted when David and Victoria Beckham named their son Brooklyn in 1999.
