Alfonso is the Spanish and Italian form of a Visigothic name formed from adal or hadu and funs, usually read as "noble and ready" or "ready for battle". It was borne by a long line of kings of Castile, León and Spain, among them Alfonso X the Wise, who sponsored great works of science and law in the 13th century. In the United States Alfonso ranked number 491 in 2000 and has gradually declined, from number 796 in 2015 to number 1012 in 2025.
