Abelardo is the Spanish and Portuguese form of Abelard, a Germanic name usually read as "noble strength" from adal, noble, and hard, strong. The medieval philosopher Peter Abelard, famous for his love letters to Heloise, made the name known across Europe. In the United States Abelardo is used chiefly in Hispanic families; it peaked at number 1332 in 2002 and has eased to number 2834 in 2025.
